Choosing Your First Credit Card
There is a first time for everything and if it is your first time acquiring your own credit card; selecting one may be very daunting. Being a first time owner of a credit card, you probably do not have any credit ratings. Besides that, your income may not allow you to receive a gold or platinum card. Nevertheless, it is important to get a credit card that meets your needs. As a basic guideline, there are several factors that you should look for in a good credit card.
Go for a credit card with low interest rates. Even with a low interest rate, it is advisable that all outstanding balance of the credit card is cleared at the end of the month. Besides that, a low interest rate does not warrant you to spend frivolously. There were cases of people who ended up in financial trouble because of spending more than they earn.
Credit cards with low annual fee are also a good choice because you are able to save some money. Some credit cards allow an annual fee waiver which allows you to save even more money. A credit card with high annual fee might affect your ability to pay the monthly credit card bills and affect your credit worthiness the next time you want to get another credit card.
As a first time credit card owner, reward programs offered by the credit card might not be an option for you. Credit cards with reward programs allow you to earn points for every pound you spend and redeem those points for goods or discounts. This system may cause you to spend more instead of saving and build your credit worthiness. Besides that, to be eligible or a reward card, you will need to have a particularly high income and credit score.
Finally, be sure to check for penalties and fees should you fail to settle your monthly credit card bills. The lesser the penalty and fees the better.
